8 Great Travel Products for Tweens
Having a Tween Changes How We Travel
Well we did it. We booked our beach vacation for this year! And while we’ve traveled with the Little, this will be her first trip on an airplane. Traveling with a tween changes how we pack, because we’re battling tween boredom. So, I’ve compiled a little list great travel products for tweens.
Even as I type this, I have to laugh. I’m a child of the 80’s. So back when I was growing up, our family traveled on every vacation via the family car. All five of us crammed into our four-door Oldsmobile Cutlas Supreme. And off we would go.
Nobody ever mentioned “travel products for tweens.” In fact, nobody used the phrase “tweens.” Our entertainment consisted of playing Slug Bug/Herbie and I Spy.
There was no “what if the kids are bored?” Nobody cared if we were occupied on the long trip. What mattered? I’ll tell you. The three of us kids keeping our bickering to a minimum so that my Dad didn’t yell and threaten to “turn the car around!”
Yet here I am, compiling a list of great tween travel products. So yeah, times have changed.
Packing Strategically for Family Vacation
As I mentioned, travel is not new for us, but the thought of traveling by air and to another country creates bit more stress for us than the road trips we’ve previously taken. In a car, I feel like I can pack as much as I want. (Within reason, of course, since excessive items annoy the hubs.)
But air travel, on the other hand, limits us. We need to be efficient and pack lighter. I absolutely hate over-packing my carry on when I’m flying. My little B is a bit of a pack-rat, so I know I’m going to have to seriously manage what she puts in her backpack.
I anticipated a lot of “When will we get there?” So, I plan to bring travel gear that will keep her busy but also not weigh us down too much.
Additionally, air travel gives us a bit less flexibility than what we are used to. We don’t have the luxury of popping into a Target or CVS once we discover we need something. So I have to be prepared and organized. (These are not my greatest strengths.)
But even so, this trip doesn’t have to be stressful or chaotic, since I already have my favorite tween travel products for my
diva daughter. Check them out below:

Tablet or Cell Phone – Little B doesn’t have her own cell phone, but she does have a tablet. It’s a must have for travel because I can download age-appropriate movies from Netflix or ebooks. She also loves playing games when we are connected to WiFi.
Portable Battery Charger – I always have a portable charger on hand so we don’t have to worry about down time and don’t have to scramble to find an outlet on the go. This Koral 2000mAh is super compact – credit card sized! I love this vibrant pink one and it also comes in purple and orange.
Earbuds – If she’s going to be watching movies or playing games then we can’t be without earbuds.
Recently, she requested an upgrade to these over-the-ear bluetooth headphones, which I am considering since they are reasonably priced and also adorable.
Paper, Pens and Pencils – My daughter can occupy herself for hours with just some paper, pens or pencils. I like these sketchbooks a lot because their size (5.5 x 8.5) is ideal for travel and can fit easily in her travel backpack.
For drawing and doodling, these coloring pencils and gel pens are bright and fun. Drawing and doodling provides hours of entertainment…..in an airport, on a plane, in a car, hotel, restaurant, and on and on. Best of all, no battery or charger required!
Mad Libs – That’s right. If you’re a child of the 80’s, like me, surely you will remember Mad Libs. If you don’t recall, or if you don’t know, it’s a game in which you have to come up with a list of words each story asks for: nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Then, you just insert the words into the blanks of the story and the results are usually hilarious.
Last but not least, we need some comfort items. My daughter loves Pusheen and I found this cute Pusheen Travel Pillow on Amazon. She can use it to nap on the plane – if she’s not too excited to sleep!
These are the tween travel products we’ll be taking along in May. I’m starting to get really excited. What am I missing? Does your tween have travel products they can’t travel without? Let me know!
